Unbelievable Part 1 & 2 - Episode Review

Becky was a real hero in this episode. She did the right thing when it was hard to do, and remained humble about it even in the end when Zoe approached her. The only parts that actually made me almost cry were when Becky outed Luke in front of the entire school and when Becky hugged Zoe at the end of the episode, knowing full well that her brother was in cuffs.

It would be nice if Zoe had some of Becky's conscious and humility. Don't get me wrong - Luke deserved to be arrested and Zoe did NOT deserve to be raped/assaulted. I definitely don't want that sort of thing for Zoe. All I want her to do is say "I shouldn't have gotten drunk" or show some sign that she is even the tiniest bit angry at herself in addition to being angry at Luke & friend… and the entire rest of the school.

Zoe makes me angry. She was mean when she first came to the school, kissing Miles in completely inappropriate places when she clearly knew it was hurting Maya. I don't think Zoe ever apologized for that. And I could be wrong about this, but I don't remember her apologizing for posting the scandalous photos of Maya online either. Personally I never saw why Maya was still friendly to Zoe after all that.

And yes, Zoe was beyond drunk when she threw herself half-naked on Miles, but she was not drunk when she decided to go to her ex-boyfriend's party in a skimpy bikini and start drinking a ton of alcohol and shouting about how she was going to get turnt up. So it makes me mad that she never even mumbles to herself “wow, I messed up,” but instead scolds Miles (one of the few people who tried helping her at all) and then comes out of it with BFF Maya to walk her to all her classes.

I would feel a lot better about Zoe having that support network (I would be HAPPY about it) if she could just admit that sometimes she messes up  and could recognize how selfless it is of people like Maya and Drew to be standing by her side.

Maybe I’m just a bad person to be so critical of Zoe, with her little UGG boots and her fat-free mocha frappachino, when she just went through something really difficult that will scar her for life. She’s probably already being ostracized by half the school and doesn’t need me to ostracize her too. She’s going through enough. At the same time, I can’t help but think that Zoe is supposed to be a controversial character, and this episode is supposed to get a conversation started. If we were supposed to feel pure sympathy for the victim, then Becky would have gotten drugged while drinking cool-aid at someone’s baptism.

A note to old Degrassi watchers: Did that talent show remind you of Paige and the Sex Kittens!?
